First Floor Redecoration
“Wow!”….this was the first word the Hotel Inspector used when viewing our completely refurbished and re-decorated first floor bedrooms.

Colour schemes and fabrics were chosen by a leading local interior designer to reflect our floral garden/country location and we are proud of the finished product. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did redesigning them.
The Les Miserables Connection
Whilst there’s regrettably no further news on when filming in Guernsey of the “Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” starring Kenneth Brannagh and Kate Wincelet will commence, there is one movie just released with strong links to the Island!

The film “Les Mis” has been nominated for 8 Academy Awards. The original “Les Miserables” was completed in Guernsey by Victor Hugo who lived here between 1856 and 1870. His home in St Peter Port “Hauteville House” is now owned by the French Government and is open to the public. Victor Hugo's house is an interesting and slightly unusual building and we would strongly recommend a visit during your next visit to the island.

Chef's Recipe for Potato Peel Pie

(a local dish that represents the hardship
of the Occupation years)
Who better to put together a recipe for an old Guernsey dish than Head Chef and Guernseyman Ian Carre.

He has advised the dish is an “acquired taste!”

Ingredients needed are potato peel, beet, milk (and a strong stomach).

Method:
Boil the peel of several potatoes with the
beet until you can put a fork in the potato.

Drain and mash together.

Add a table spoon of milk, salt, pepper
and a dab of Guernsey butter *

Put in a baking dish, decorate with potato peels in a fan design on top, brush with butter and place in the oven
for 15 minutes or so.

Good Luck!
* butter from other regions will probably work okay
And Finally . . . . a Strange but True Story!
Those of you who have stayed with us before may have noticed a framed painting of a cat in the Lounge. The actual picture was kindly presented to us by another of our Guests and reminds us all of the following incredible story . . .

Around four years ago, a very young stray cat appeared in our Grounds with no collar and obvious home, the staff felt sorry for it and over the next few years it was adopted as the Hotel cat (though it never came in the actual Hotel).

Most Guests were completely unaware of its presence until one day it decided to enter the Restaurant through an open window during Dinner and unfortunately landed next to a man who had an allergy to cats . . .

This caused quite a commotion at the time resulting in the man threatening to sue the Hotel and post some rather uncomplimentary comments on the Internet about us.

So…with a little sadness we called the local Animal Aid Centre and they came and took the cat away. A few days later, we received a call from the Centre to say that they discovered the cat had a micro-chip fitted and they had traced its owners to the other side of the Island. They had not seen it since Christmas four years before! . . . but that’s not all…the owners tuned out to be regular Diners in our Restaurant and had eaten many times with us, never knowing that their beloved pet was here!
